Having worked with clients using Xero for a few years now, it always amazes me how much innovation happens with this ‘cloud’ based software. Every six weeks there are rollouts of new features and fixes, and they have an interactive community where users can add feature requests and vote on what features they would like to see up and coming.
The most significant feature rollout by far has been integrated payroll, and while it has gone through is clumsy infancy, it is now in it’s awkward adolescence and is very user-friendly, however I know it will only get better as it matures to adulthood.
The basic payroll includes:
- being able to lodge Tax File Number declaration forms online directly to the ATO when newbies start
- full leave request/approval and tracking capability
- and low-access logins for staff so they can just see and download their payslips and end of year payment summaries. You can even add their photo!
Of course for more complex situations like where you need to pay different rates based on times worked by awards (eg. after 6pm rates), you’re probably best to look at the various third party ‘add on’ programs that ‘talk’ to Xero – plug in your award & classification for each staff member, get them to submit their timesheet or clock on/off (often via a smartphone/tablet app!), and presto, you have a fully compliant pay run.
Some of the HR/timesheet providers we think look good and hook into Xero are:
TANDA – https://www.tanda.co/
KeyPay – http://keypay.com.au/
So check them out and make small business payroll a breeze!
